Design Technology is an inspiring subject based in Salcombe building. It currently caters for students studying Textiles and Food Technology and the Product Design room will soon be opening which will enable students to work with a range of materials including a 3D printer.
The department is led by Miss Harris who is supported by a DT specialist teacher, Miss Ambreen and a DT technician, Mrs Collins.
The department has excellent facilities including:
- A specialist food and catering room
- A textiles room with 15 sewing machines
- A full IT suite
- A Product Design room opening in the autumn term 2016
Key Stage 3
During Key Stage 3 students have one lesson a week in Design Technology and rotate between textiles and food technology. Students learn a range of skills and materials. Projects include using electronic components in an e-textiles product, this is where students learn about constructing products using fabric, applique and embroidery and then add electronic components using LEDs and tilt switches. In food technology students focus on food hygiene and safety as well as making healthy eating dishes with a particular emphasis on reducing sugar in our diets.
Key Stage 4
At Key stage 4 Design Technology currently offers the new specification in GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition including a vocational qualification, the Food Hygiene Certificate. Students will be following the AQA specification which equips students with an array of culinary techniques, as well as knowledge of nutrition, food traditions and kitchen safety. This qualification focuses on nurturing students’ practical cookery skills to give them a strong understanding of nutrition. Food preparation skills are integrated into five core topics:
- Food, nutrition and health
- Food science
- Food safety
- Food choice
- Food provenance.
