The Media Department at Lawn Manor Academy is always buzzing with excitement and creativity. The subject is extremely popular with the students and the course is oversubscribed. Media studies is challenging but rewarding and it enables students to exploit talents in a whole variety of areas, for example, photography, film and editing, storyboarding and design. It allows group work where students can collaborate to make trailers, video games and magazines.
Key Stage 4 media lessons for year 9 are currently taught 4 times a week and years 10 and 11 have three lessons. Year 9 is an exciting time as there are opportunities to learn the broader spectrum of the media industry.
We have looked at many different forms of print, e-media and broadcast texts which capture the imagination and interest of all media students. Examples of texts currently studied by year 9 are TV Crime Drama, TV Game Shows, Music Video and Promotion, Advertising and Disaster Films. Years 10 and 11 have concentrated on specific texts; Print Based Advertising, The Promotion of Bands and Music Artists, Magazine Production and Film Trailers which will be used for controlled assessment pieces. These students have also focussed on topics for their exams which have been Gaming, Science Fiction Films and TV Game Shows.
The media lessons are taught in IT suites where students can access editing packages, for example, Photoshop and Serif MoviePlus for practical elements and there are dedicated classrooms for theory lessons. There are also a range of digital Xacti cameras for students to use.
Students have had opportunities to go on a residential to London where they interacted with industry professionals and have had Green screen and animation workshops that were held in-house by media experts from Chocolate Films and The Movie Workshop.
Media studies really is fun and students are able to express their ideas and interests in many different formats.
After taking GCSE media the next step would be to study A’ level or to go on to Media Production or Media Makeup where skills can be enhanced and further explored to produce work to an even more professional standard.
